My female betta (named Delphi) has a small white glob on her back, near her dorsal fin.
I'd just assume this was a bacteria or fungus or something else equally sinister, except for something I did on Monday. I had switched the gravel in her tank for some brand new sand I got. If you're not familiar with sand, its really messy and can be pretty cloudy if you don't rinse it obsessively first. So Delphi is hanging out in a bucket of tank water, and her tank is all cloudy with sand stuff but the bag of sand came with a Caribsea "Biomagnet clarifier" that basically just clumps together all of the tiny particles so that the filter can filter them out. I put some of that stuff in, and then put Delphi back in a few minutes later. Eventually there were clumps of gooey looking coagulated sand dust floating around the tank, and some of the sand lumps were getting stuck to her sides and fins, but those clumps eventually fell away. This is when I first noticed the glob, near her dorsal fin.
I just figured it was a lump of sand gunk or something that got stuck to her slime coat. But it's been a couple days now and the lump is still there, and I'm starting to wonder if it's really just sand.
Is it sand? Or is she sick? Should I medicate her with anything or wait it out?
The tank is about 2g, filtered, cycled, heated, water parameters are good, just did a 50% wc today.
Pic Here's some really bad pictures of the blob taken with my camera phone
