I had just done a 50% water change as it was due and noticed the fish all swimming at the top, which they always do after i've done one. When I looked closer, I noticed one of the males has this white flaky thing which looks like it's stuck to it's fin. The other one looks like it's got a white flaky thing stuck to it's eye. It's very weird. It's only 2 males the females are fine.
The pics aren't very clear sorry.
This pic it's the male on the left. You can just make out these flaky bits.

in this one it's also the one on the left and you can see it on his eye.

This is the same male as the first pic you can see it a bit more on his fin.

The ammonia has been at 0 for a while and the PH blue and stable.
Any ideas what it could be? Thanks.

Just lost one of the males. He was swimming upside down and "twirling" and just fell to the bottom :-( I don't know what happened. He was fine before I changed the water
He is the one in my avatar. I'm devastated.

I'm devastated.

I know the feeling, I lost my favourite fish (a male platy) today too. I just wanted to say sorry for your loss. I've no idea what the flaky thing are ... maybe some kind of fungus?

Hope you find out what it is and save the rest of your fish

Best wishes

Thanks :( He was my favorite, I have just lost a female too-she did the exact same thing swimming upside down and twirling.
The male who is in the pic, I cupped him in my hand stil in the water to have a closer look but it was a flake, it came off in my hand and he's swimming around. I did the same with the endler and the flake came off his eye and tail and he's swimming around now too
I don't get it. I don't know why the rest of them are swimming with their mouths at the top when the waters just been changed! I think I cause them hassle by changing the water. The stats were perfect before I changed them :-(

Have you tested the water since you changed it? I know Taffy Apple posted today about extra chemicals been in the water this time of year and I'm just wondering if that could be the problem. Noses to the surface does suggest ammonia in there

I never thought I'd get upset over losing a fish but my male platy was my favourite. He was the only fish I'd actually pointed to in the lfs and 'chosen'. All the others I've just asked for 2 of this or that. He's left behind 14 fry in my spare tank though and it's looking like my female could be pregnant again so I'm hoping for another male just like his dad!

Aww hopefully. That's good you have fry, my males wont go near my females
I am really upset. I have been googling and just found someone who had the exact same twirling

Yeah I have tested it 3 times now with half hour intervals. The latest about 10 mins ago. The ammonia is 0.

Do you mean fish flake? That may not have been a flake, although it fell easily. Really sorry for the loss :good:

if your water parameters look good then as the other forum says it may be happening for no apparent reason. I don't know where my platy got dropsy from - it appeared from nowhere and all my other fish are fine. Sometimes it just doesn't make sense does it? ... it's really not fair. We look after our fish and get upset when they die and the people who don't care and don't take care of them don't get the deaths.

Life is poo :(

just had a thought. Do you have some stresscoat? If it were me right now I'd be putting a full dose in

Yeah I do. I will put some in.
I have did a 90% water change about 10 mins ago. The plec is having a great time swimming about from wall to wall but the others are up top again
I realised the temperature was reading a bit high on the thermometer even though the heater is set to 24-it was showing at 28  since doing the water change it's showing at 25 I think. Could this maybe have something to do with it?
Just tested the water before typing this so has time to set and the ammonia is spot on pale yellow and the PH blue. Something defo going on.

I guess they could be too warm but that wouldn't make them die surely?

In that link that I posted in an earlier reply, someone had put that "guppies just die" or a "bad batch" my waters fine, the temperatures fine must be to do with pets at home.

the 3 words I dread reading in any post here. Pets at Home ...

They have such a big variety though. I would love to get them from a breeder but they are too far away or on ebay they have expensive courier and it's a lot of money for a fish which could arrive DOA.
Dobbies garden centre have stunning fish and a marine section too. This little endler who I really REALLY hope makes it is from there. They only had 1 and said they are quite rare and they hardly get them. The one from pets at home-also the last one is already dead :(

Guppies have no problem at 28 degrees at all, although I would do it only for fry when growing up. A problem is though when the temperature changes very quick. 3 degrees difference is a bit too much of a temperature drop over a water change. If you have done that quite often without realizing it, it can cause all kind of diseases due to stress. :/
