 I just noticed that my black balloon molly has something on his body. He has 3 fuzzy white dots (two on his tail and one on his fin) and I have no idea what it is. They look a little like Ick, but not as distinct and they have some dimension. He's acting perectly normal, but I'm going to transport him into a hospital tank just in case. :-( The only problem is that I don't know what I should treat for. I'm pretty sure that it isn't Ick and I was thinking it was some sort of Fungus or external parasite. I have some medications available, but which one should I use? I have Maracyn-Two and Jungle Fungus Clear. Does anyone know what this white stuff is on his body and What shoudl I treat it for?

 The tank has been established for more than a year and the water quailty is fine (I'm going to test the water now to double check). I do weekly water changes (20- 25%) and the temperature is 78 degrees. I haven't added any new fish for a couple of weeks.

Thanks for any advice! :)

No one has any help to offer! :-(

I'm just going to treat him for Ick, then if that doesn't work I'll treat him for Fungus and if there is no improvement, I'll treat him for Parasites. Is this too risky? I think so, but first I'll see if the Ick medication cures up his disease. I'll also try to get some good pictures of him with the white spots. :(

Chances are that the white thing you are seeing will clear up with the Ich Meds...sorry I didn't see this post sooner, I would've replied then.

If the spots start clearing up then keep up with the full course of treatment as per what the bottle says...if it doesn't help then do a water change and try the next medication. You will also need to take the carbon out of any filters as carbon will remove the medication from the water.

Let us know how you get on

It sounds more like a fungal infection, Ick usually manifests itself like shaken salt over the body. It does not usually appear in patches. Patches of cotton bud like blotches are usually fungus infections. Mollies are quite suseptible to fungal infections.

Hi, my mollie has also just come down with something similar. It has white patches, stringy like on it's back and sides. Noticed it yesterday, it came on in hours. My water has high nitrates. I changed 20% which reduced the nitrates and added ick treatment. He seems a lot more lively today.

I introduced a new fish on wednesday (platty) which was dead thursday morning. Then my mollie gets this. It's the second time I've had an outbreak in 5 weeks, the last time was after introducing fish from the same shop! I lost a mollie and 2 platties then.

Watch for your fish flicking themselves of rocks and other things, that usually an early sign something is irratating them.

:/ Should I treat him with Ick medicine or Fungus medication? The spots look like Ick, but they're fuzzier, really tiny and they "pop" of of his fins. I'll try to get some pictures of him for an easier veiw of his mysterious disease!

sounds fungal. ich is a parasite that attaches to the host. the white spots are not usually fuzzy but well defined. would agree with dragonslair.

what is the temp in your tank? sorry if i missedd it

The temperature is 78 degrees in my main tank, but I moved him into a hospital tank for treatment.

I was browsing the net looking for good fish databases, and came across this site

http://www.fishdoc.co.uk/disease/whitespot...ce=solodvds.com

Seems to be pretty good info on ich. Browse around, and see if that's what your fish has. If that's not it, they have all kinds of info on other diseases. I'm not a pro, but there's lots of info out there. Hope it was of some help. Good luck in your disease thing. (I just came out with ich too by the way. I cranked my heat up, and it seems to be going away)
