30+ years ago I had a keen interest in tropical fish and usually had 6+ tanks in use including a 125 gal in which I kept 2 Oscars amoung 5 or 6 other chiclids large enough to live with oscars. In those days the filtration system was powered only by compressed air with a flow rate probably only 20 percent of those in use today. I siphoned the tank only every 10 days or so and replaced only about 10 to 15 gal of water. The water was always crystal clear. Current tank I siphon 2-3 times/week and replace approx 10 gal of water each time.
The current tank contains one 9 to 10 month old Oscar ( approx 5 in length) in a 40 gal tank. ( realize I will need a larger tank later)
My problem from the beginning has been mildly cloudy water which appears to caused by very small white bubbles which I suspect are some type of bacteria. The only times the water will become clear is which the biofilters are almost completely covered with slime causing the filters to overflow slightly. When I remove part of slime, the cloudiness returns. Potassium permanganate will clear the water, but only briefly.
I feed the fish with individual particles of food (approx.75% pellets and chidlid sticks, 25% raw cod fillets, crickets, goldfish, minnows) with almost no uneatened food remaining in the tank.
What is causing this white colored cloudiness that has been a problem since the Oscar was only 1 1/2" long? Pardon the spelling.
