Hi guys!

Haven't posted here before, but am really curious if anyone has ever heard of a white cloud mountain minnow suddenly sprouting an extension of its caudal without any particular cause (that I can find). I've had four white clouds for about a year and a half and this lucky fishy has grown an extension of the upper lobe of its tail. This must have happened over just a day or two...very quickly...I pay a lot of attention to the specific details of all of my fish and their behavior and I didn't see this a couple of days ago when I was last watching the minnows cavort.

I have never seen any reference to such an event occuring, and these minnows have never shown this type of tail form before. I've seen fish regrow nipped fins, but never grow fins that were never there!

Here's a crisp shot of my lovely (and cooperative!) white cloud sporting his (or her...I have no idea which) new fancy half-lyretail.

Let me know if you have any idea what's going on with this one!

Thanks a lot,

David

It could be the mutant genes. By way your lyretail minnow is a she. That's first time I saw lyre type into white cloud mountain minnows.

There is a long finned breed. They don't have a lyretail, but they do have a forked tail. Maybe it's an intermediate form. I like it, though - is its tail normally like that, with only the top fork? I think that looks neat.

I'm pretty sure golden meteor minnows are just a color form - the regular long finned white clouds are sometimes called meteor minnows. Anyway, in some of the pictures, the fish have a similar tail to yours, but only with a bottom fork added.

The tail has always been normal, but has been like this for about a week. I've been watching it and it seems not to be changing. The long finned variety are quite different in that all of their fins are long...But I like her too, she reminds me of a shark or tuna or something...lol.
