Hi y'all, I bought a brand new 2217+ and it's been set up for a few days, but it's not silent, apart from a low grumble it's also whistling. I tried various things, tilting out air, removing a couple of sponge pads to allow more air through the canister, I've checked the impeller is in tact and correctly placed, there are no kinks in the hoses.... any ideas what it could be, or what else I could try please? Thanks

The first thing that I would look for when I have a whistling sound is an air leak on the inlet. Many joints can produce that kind of sound with very little air leakage. It works much like the blade of grass we used to blow across to make very loud sounds as children. The air moves past a flexible member, perhaps a gasket, and sets up a resonance that can be quite annoying. I would carefully check any gasketed joints that do not see water pressure because they are ahead of the impeller in the flow path. One of them is probably allowing a small amount of air to leak into the filter. If you unplug the filter, this leak would become a slow water leak, so it is definitely not just an irritation, it is a potential water leak with any power failure.

I have tried the method of turning it off to see if water leaks but none does

With the Eheim, it has a candy cane shaped intake and the hose simply fits over this without any screws to tighten (although the hose is very much on the intake otherwise it would leak), there are screws/nuts at the taps, no water or air is leaking there and the hose that fits over the spraybar is underwater anyway, it's very bizarre

Nelly it's primed by human suction the first time! No priming pump. There is a cap on the end of the spray bar.

The whistling isn't coming from the canister I don't think, when I put my head in the cabinet I can't hear it, so it must be coming from somewhere else, but I'm damned if I can find it

i read a thread the other day bout eheim, and lad had same problem, he realised it was the outlet jet,he bunged it up with cloth and wistle went, also he drilled the spray bar holes bigger, said it worked and now its silent, try just removing the spraybar leaving on the outlet pipe, see what happens

Okies I will have a go in the morning, where did he bung it up with a cloth though?

I beleive the end of the spray bar, obviously not alot of cloth  you know usually where the plastic cap is, just inside there, only a idea mind, might not be the problem, but just funny how you said that just after id read that thread

I was hoping as I hadnt heard from you, that this had sorted itself out

Have you made sure all the taps/hoses are tightly screwed in? The inlet/outlet hoses screwed tightly? The grumbling should have started to go by now, Ive definately never had one whistle before

Everything's tight I guess, I can't tighten it anymore and it's not leaking anywhere, so I'm guessing that 'handtight' is tight enough, but I did just slightly turn the flow down which stopped the whistling, although I can still hear the canister, I thought it was literally silent, but I can hear it running. Saying that, my cabinet is open backed, which I guess is the reason I can hear it, though can't hear it over the kids/t.v. only if I'm in the room alone

Give it a while it will go quieter, all my cabinets are open backed too.

Still not sure why on full flow it whistles

Btw, that tank looks stunning :good:

Thanks hun, for all your help so far and luffley comments, I am verging on OCD with layouts and decor, not just the tank but the house too, I drive my husband MAD!!xx
