Whisper 30-60 Gallon Heater

i bought a whisper aquarium heater rated for a 30-60 gallon tank for my 40 gal. bow front. it would never raise the temp and after a couple of weeks i decided to take it back. unfortunately, the receipt and box were already in a landfill. so, i started trying to fix it. there was nothing apparent wrong internally, so i turned my attention to the thermostat adjustment. the thumb adjust can be popped off promptly via pocket knife. here's what i did: after heater is cooled and removed from tank and unplugged, turn the thermostat lever to max. now, remove the thumb adjust, and replace it again on the shaft but back at the minimal position. now, you can turn it up higher. this worked for me. seems to be an error at the manufacturer plant. proceed at your own risk. if you're not careful you could kill your fish and electrocute yourself.
