Well i'm wondering, would it be better for me to get a freshwater barracuda with my asian tiger fish or a south african Chichlid? I got a 10 gallon, and 14 feeder minows so i dunno which would do better or which fish would my tiger fish better get along with?

Neither.

10 gallons is too small for either of those fishes. Your 14 feeder minnows is already pushing it as it is.

If I'm not mistaken, a barracuda needs a tank that is at least 90 gallons. Keeping it in a smaller tank will stunt it's growth.

Not sure what an asian tiger fish is, never heard of it even, but fairly confident that it will grow too big for a 10 gallon as well. I would recommend getting rid of it.

Have you cycled your tank yet? If not, please read the FAQ topic in this forum.

o no, my 14 minows are in a different 10 gallon, my asian tiger fish won't get too big, it's on my avatar there, but i've seen a full size freshwater barracuda, they're about 8 inches, how big do south african cichlids grow? and are you sure about the smaller tank stunts growth, I've heard that only works for goldfish and yes my tank was cycling for two weeks before i bought my fish

Any idea as to what the scientific name of an asian tiger fish is?

The reason you've seen a 8 inch barracuda is because it's stunted. They should be around 30 I think...

Here are some websites with info on them.

Just because your tank has been cycling for two weeks doesn't mean it is cycled. How are you sure it is cycled? Any nitrate, ammonia, nitrite readings?

And I don't think there is any such thing as a South African cichlid, you must be thinking of South American cichlids. It is not a specific fish, but just a type of fish.

Look them up in the index section.

Hope This Helps.

It is essential that you find out straightaway what species your tigerfish is.

I've done a quick Google, but all the Asian tiger fish I can find are a) brackish B) need very large tanks. Hopefully, you haven't got one of those, but you really must know what your fish is in order to be able to cater to its needs. Let us know what you've got.

The barracuda, as stated above, will grow too large for the tank. The stunting of growth in fish can work in different ways, depending on species, either they stay small (and unhealthy), or they get say a deformed tail (if unable to move properly), or they simply die before their time, or they become irritable and/or susceptible to disease. In a small tank like yours the most likely outcome is that it will die from ammonia poisoning before it has the time to develop the other problems.

The fact that you have seen one 8 inch fish of this species tells us nothing about how big they can grow or how big they need to grow if healthy.

A 10 gallon tank is suitable for small fish such as minnows, guppies, small rasboras, one betta, one dwarf puffer (if you have the facilites and expertise to look after it properly), African dwarf frogs, platies, small corydoras etc.

To keep Oddballs, you need a good-sized cycled tank and, usually, very good filtration. For most people it works better to start with something hardier and work their way up. That way you will learn about cycling a tank, keeping the water stats stable etc before you try your knowledge out on something really sensitive (and expensive).
