Wouldn't You Like To Know?
Hello. Well, as you might have read in my thread in the newbie section, I don't know a whole lot about fish. I have a tank, and one goldfish  . My mum and I want to get some new fish, and I thought tropical ones would be a good choice. So, I was wondering if any of you had some good suggestions on some good starter tropical fish.

Brittany suggested a Betta since they don't need a heater, which sounds good to me. :)

betta's are great hardy fish, you may also want to look at some of the live bearers like molies, platy's, swordtails and guppies. they are VERY hearty and easy to take care of

guppys they also dont need a heater... they can be a little fragile compaired to a molly but well worth the effort imo.

I recommend guppies you can put only a few male female pairs and before you know it u will have plenty to look at! :D

I recommend tiger barbs. if you get a school of 4 or more, they are super fun to watch. really pretty fish too. and they are hardy as heck. they are easily my favorite fish.

Guppies are an excellant fish for the beginner but you will need a filter and a heater (keep at 75 degrees).

Majority says guppies. Thanks. I'll look into the other fish mentioned as well. I'll have a talk with me mum. Thanks again for your input. :D

Discus are perfect for any beginner.

Why would anyone NOT want to waste a lot of time and money to learn something the hard way? Sounds fun to me...

Actually maybe you'd be better with something like guppies, mollyies, platys, catfish, even tetra's are ok.

Hi Manda

The best fish to begin with are fish that will do well in your tap water. If you talk to your LFS they should be able to tell you which fish are best suited to your water.

I breed discus, but can not keep guppys alive for long, in my tap water. What ever you choose, keep the tank clean, the water changes regular, and keep testing your water.

Agree with dolphin - find out what best suits your local water

....and I'l just chuck danios into the equation aswell ;)

:)

I'll second Tetras. I really like them and have had great luck with them. They survived all my beginner mistakes  I've also had luck with Cherry Barbs so far, a great little entertaining fish.

lol you nut

i've had my tank now for about a month and have had good luck with the 4 skirted tetras i have. it kinda stinks that you're relegated to certain fish, but ah well...it's better than getting something you can't handle and having it die on you.

no one has said catfish yet!! Maybe some Corys???, especially smalle ones where you can keep more!! ;)

What size is your tank??
