Hi, I want to paint the back of my new tank, which is the best paint to use?

I have some metal proteck spray paint, but it doesnt say whether it can be used on glass or not, would it be ok to use this or would I be better off getting some emulsion or some gloss paint?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

(I would use the seach function to find the answer for this as Im sure its been asked before but hey ho the search function is busted)

Hi, If I were you I would give the spray a go first as you already have it but do a few light coats (assuming either your tank is empty or you have it very well covered, don't wan't any getting in the tank!). If it doesn't work you can always scrape it off with a razor blade (not sure how easy this would be with metal paint, it's very easy with emulsion!) and use an emulsion paint :good: . I did the back of my 4' and my 2' tanks with 2 tester pots.

I have just done a black back drop for my new tank, i used a scrap roll of chip paper and painted it black with poster paint than used sticky tape to attach to back of tank, great effect for no cost, it only took 20 mins to as the paint drys real quick.

Agree.... I think most will be suitable, but the colour is the question???.... Mineral green to royal blue, and (as was said) black is also considerable......

i would just get a black or blue background and stick it on ppl tend 2 change tanks like they do underwear so the next person mite not like it and it mite affect selling price but just my opinion lol

ANY paint as long as it will stick ! water based paint tends to collect into globules... but anything else will do - as a wise precaution stay away from the seals - or mask them.

Most can be removed with a blade, so its easy to change (once dry) with NO chemicals.

Either you have lousy personal habits, or youre in the wrong hobby !

Ive had tanks for DECADES ! :hey:

Alternatively, you can do what i have done and just paint the wall !!! lol

Honestly. It was the missus idea not mine...

Thanks for the advice guys, I was going for a black background and as Im planning on not moving the fish again, changing it isnt a problem.

Was going to mask up the sides, lid etc before doing it, but thanks for saying about the seals, will mask those too.

Think I will get a small pot of emulsion as having tested the spray stuff I had, it didnt work too well.

Dont fancy painting the wall space behind it black, as I have a habit of moving tanks around as I find space or re-arrange furniture, plus I like to leave a gap between tanks and the walls to make maintenance a little easier on myself.

Well thought out matey,

i am hoping when i get the new tank, i wont need to spend any time around the back of it, as the sump will contain all the bits and pieces i need to get too.

Fingers crossed right lol

HAHA!!!! good for you ..... btw wasnt stating that ppl change tanks for any other purpose other than upgrading...some ppl dont or cant keep more than 1 so if they do upgrade they have 2 sell the 1 theyve already got hence my post :p

How did you get on with this, im in the process of setting up my latest tank and was planning to paint the back but was nt sure what to use, someone mentioned black board paint? But the search is nt working.

Havent done it yet mate, tank doesnt arrive until next week, I was asking in advance, but once its done, I shall let you know and post some pics up.

Flash that sounds like a good idea, is it costly?

About £5 a meter, trim the vinyl to a rough size (comes in 600mm - 24" wide) clean the glass, spray the glass down with soapy water (10 to 1 mix), peel the backing off starting at one side, once its on squeegee the excess water and air out(work from the middle out)

first tank i did was my rio 180 in light blue (theres the odd air bubble traped you can get rig of these with a pin) 4-5 pic down................
