I think i have a pregnant guppy and platy and would like to be prepared for the big day(s) I have been looking at breeding nets and plastic breeding tanks and I don't know which one is better  Any ideas? I have also seen a floating breeding tank and one that sticks onto the side of the fish tank with suckers.

Thanks

Lynn

When i tryed to breed my swordies i found it best to use the floatin tank or even one with suction. But its hard to do, cuz u dont want to rush them. If you do they're just goin to abort pregnacy. You should try next time to move the livebearers to a differnt tank b4 pregnancy that way when they give birth u take the parents out and put them into the original tank

I was thinking of letting them have the fry in the main tank and then moving the fry to breeding tank asap. Is this not a good idea?

well the parents are goin to eat the fry. It could end up as a pain tryin to get all the fry out of the main tank

I wouldnt recomend any of the plastic breeding traps as they are very small and stress the mother out so that she might abort the fry.

The breeding nets are much bigger and far less stressful. They are also useful as a timeout area for injured fish, and for keeping fry in until they are big enugh to join the main tank.

I tend to dip the constructed net into the tank on its side, then the curious fish inevitably come to explore this new object and swim in. Its just a case of waiting until the pregnant female swims in then quickly righting the net and attaching it to your tank.

Its time consuming, and needs patience, but is much less stressful than chasing the female around the tank with a net. :)
