I am planning to have a 10 gallons aquarium with plenty of plants. Am interested in keeping just one variety of fish which don’t grow too big. Being a starter, would anyone care to suggest which is the most hardy & easy to keep fish and how many of it should I keep? (I am not interested in livebearers so please suggest non-livebearers).

Ifound that a cool fish to have for a beginner is a Swordtail. I've allways liked the looks of them and their a farily easy fish to keep. An other would be Tetras if you get a bunch of the same type of tetras it can look very cool, especialy Neon Tetras. If you want to keep it simple, I love Comet and Fantailed Goldfish( But they are very messy )

Whatever you get keep to small fish , if you go by the 1inch to the gallon rule you could have about 12 small fish.

Dont get gold fish they need 10 Gallons each.

Cherry barbs would do well in this tank. They like it planted as they are a little shy. A trio (1 male, 2 females) would still leave room for a little group of the smaller corydoras- though if you wanted a single species tank, you could have 6 barbs instead.
Another suggestion is a school of 6 glowlight tetras.
Or 4 honey gouramis (1 male+ a harem)

I would do a fishless cycle first.

In a small well planted tank - it has to be cardinal tetras every time.

I know its been done time & time again, but there's a reason for this - against a lush green bachround those little blue & red beauties look great !

But make sure you thoroughly cycle your tank first - preferably fishless

rummy noses tetra's are another possibility, just a little bit different and they're quite cool, or harlequin rasbora's.

i also like dwarf gourami's idea of a trio of cherry barbs and soem small cory's :good:

i would have to recomend corries. ive never had a death with them and they seem to me as a pretty hardy fish if they can withstand my still cycling tank.
numbers? i would say 6 or more (but defenitly no less than 6).. they are a shoaling fish and love company.
from what i have observed with my corries they dont eat the plants so you shouldnt have a problem with them nibbling on them.
