So I've finally decided to go for a Fluval Roma 200 but the question is should I go for an external filter or stick with the internal one that comes as part of the bundle? I don't like the idea of swapping it after the tank has settled so want to get the decision right now.

My local shop said thay would be happy to include an external filter and I pay the difference which I thought was fair. They offered the choice of the Fluval 206 or 306. Has anyone got any experiences with these models? Also what size should I go for?

This is my first tank purchase so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks....Ryan

I would take out the internal and go with a tetratec or hydor...seals tend to on the fluvals take a look at the worst filter thread :good:

I've 3 Fluvals and they have all been great... but I just replaced my 305 with a Tetratec ex1200(due to everyone raving about it on here!!!) and wooo its amazing.

Can you not go to the Fluval 240? This is the one I just bought and it is excellent. It has an external filter supplied and the inlet and outlet pipes go through the bottom of the tank so no pipes down the back.

Seapets sell it and a load of additional stuff included (plus free delivery if you're not at the end of the world like I am in Cornwall). Have a look, the one with old style cabinet (which I have) is still available for £365 all in.

Thanks for the quick response. It seems that a lot of people are raving about the Tetratec Ex1200. I've had a quick look online and would the EX1200 be too powerful for my 200ltr tank? I noticed that the EX700 is ok for 100 - 250 ltr tanks so is there any great advantage of going for a filter larger than the tanks capacity?

There is only £15 between the 2 models so price is not a problem but I dont want something that will always run on minimum unless there is a good reason to do so.

Thanks again for any help.

Thanks for the advice....

My wife has only approved because she likes the new style Roma cabinet :) but I can get the Roma 200 in the new style with a bundle for £375 so all good there.

I was quite happy to go for a Fluval external but after a bit more research it seems there a more positive reviews about the Tetratec Ex700 / Ex1200 so I may go for considering one of these if my local supplier stocks them.

Thanks again

Mine is on a 110 litre! It is to powerful for my tank so I have just turned the flow down a bit on it. It's rated for tanks 200l + so would have thought it would be fine. the ex700 i'm sure would be fine. I have the EX1200 because i'm going to attempt a very heavily planted tank with CO2 so I need good flow.

Get the ex1200 you just reduce the flow using the green taps.

Thanks the help & pics everyone. I'm sure there will be plenty more questions coming from me over the next few months / years :S

I have the same dilemma, i recently got the fluval roma 200, and i want to uprgade filter wise, im wondering whether to get a fluval 205 or 305? or a tetratec and then leave the u4 inside, or move it to my 54 litre tank... anyway, i could buy another u4, but there isnt much difference in price between the u4 and the 205/305... and also externals are better...

Too many choices eh! How have you found the Roma 200?

The tetratec can filter the tank on its own and then some. you will be getting close to x5 turning over the water so ideal then put your u4 in another tank
