I've used the sponge filter (like the third pic) and had fry get stuck in there and currently have the box filter which is the first one you have pictured. This seems fine but remember to have a valve control on your airline so that you can set it to release only one bubble a second or as low as it can go. I like to put mature gravel in the bottom to keep it in place and also help to cycle as well as the filter floss :)

I don't use any filter, only airline tubing. After they hit three or four weeks I add a sponge filter.

Joby~ I've always been paranoid of the box filters because I heard horror stories of juvies wandering in and getting trapped. Have you ever seen such a thing because I really like those and I found a couple while cleaning out under my big tanks this week. I currently have 4+ spawns lined up and I could easily put them to use :hey:

Well this is my first succesful spawn using one but I know Bettaman uses them on all his fry tanks and has great success :)

Edited - Just wanted to add that I've also watched 5 day old fry swim right across the intake of them and never been sucked in, I guess if they are weak or poorly then its possible :dunno:

I'm using one of the Smallworld filters in my fry tank and it seems to be doing the trick :) I added it at week 2

I use something exsactly like the smallworld, but the brand I have is called Shark. Either way, that works good for me. I added mine much later though. Two months.

Well you don't really need a filter for breeding bettas, you just need a good heater and enviorment... well at least that's what me and my buddies do.

i have tried breeding with both a sponge filter right from the start and i have tried it without a filter, both methods worked for me. i prefer not using a filter at first though because the water is treated with indian almond leaf and i want all the minerals etc. present in the water, more importantly, i also want the water as still as possible to initiate breeding. after a couple of weeks when the fry are swimming etc. then it's recommended to throw the sponge filter in.
