All,

I have just recieved my new Trigon 350 and am trying to decide which filter to keep her nice and clean..
I would like to seriously over filter as I like my water crystal, and also considering a UV at a later date.
Tank will be med-heavily planted with pressurised CO², using the filter as a reactor.

I have narrowed down to 2 filters due to the flowrates and GPH's.
EHEIM:

2078 - P3e - Has some fancy features such as 2 pre-set flowrates and stream - which I think would be good, but not sure if i'll take full advantage of them and imagine after the initial apeal has worn off that they will never be used. The electronics start alarm bells, and doubt they will be as robust as the traditional sytle ehiem's. Reports of having higher flowrates than the 2080.

2080 - P3 - Traditional style, huge media bin, and high flow rates. Less to go wrong, but doesn't have the fancy buttons and settings. Dual inlet and single outlet allows for better circulation....

Interested to know which one you would recommend over the other and why...

Basically; which one is better, and will keep my tank cleaner ?

Regards,

Neil

I hate saying this, however, I would advise you of another filter, the fluval fx5. I think for the price and how quick they can clean up the water, they are very hard to beat.

I over filter my tank big time, and use these monsters to do so. all my friends who keep fish, swapped out their eheims when they saw the fx5 and what it could do.

my water is what i class as mineral quality.

heres a vid as ever...

however you will find others advising you on other filters, each to their own i guess, but ive had this now for around 4 years ish and im very happy with it, its still priming and stops for a min every 24/hours to purge any air..very clever filter.

Thanks for the advice...

After having an Eheim 2026 for the past 2.5 yrs it will take a lot to sway me away from Eheim;

The build quality, silent running, and filtration power is second to none..

The FX5 build quality looks flimsy grey plastic, and I have heard issues with cleaning and restricted media quantity. To the extent that people are modifying to increase media content.

But thoughts are very much appreciated.

this eheims are better made yes, i also think the way the media goes into the filter is better with the eheims also.

however, the fx5 can clean a tank faster of debris than any eheim 'fact fx5 is better!', this i am sure can be found on youtube. the filter is a monster at doing its job. ive never had an issue with any fx5s, nor has any of my friends 'i have around 5 friends who converted from eheim to fx5' and not one of them has had any issue.

on top of that, the fx5 nowadays can be bought from under £90 off ebay compared to the big price tags on the eheims.

'i should get shares in fluval for all the advertising i do'

but, at the end of the day, i am sure you will have a great looking tank, whatever you go for.

Have to disagree with the previous post, i have owned a FX5 and currently own a 2078 and 2080.

Steer well clear of the FX5 is my advice, nothing but trouble! With the Eheim you really are paying for quality. I will never look back on my decision changing the FX5 for the Eheims. No matter what people will say, the FX5 is effectively a budget filter and mine lasted no more than 1.5 years. I have heared people saying their eheim is still running after 15 years.

Have a look at this topic:

Fair to say the Eheim won hands down.

Its entirelly up to you though whether you still want to have your filter running after a year and a half.

Let us know what you choose, Best Regards,

Adam

Ok,

I've taken the plunge, and gone for the 2080;

Higher flowrate
Robust
Dual pickup
HUGH media capacity
No electronics to go wrong...

Think I got a pretty damn good deal too..

Got it for £225, delivered including media from Zooplus.
PLUS i did the purchase through Quidco and got another 5% cashback taking it down to £213.75

The closest to that was 1st4aquatics @ £236.96

fair comment, and each to their own in regard fx5 -v- eheim. the fx5 is a lot cheaper yes and could be classed as a budget filter.

something was clearly wrong in either the filter or how it was used to only last 1.5years. ive had mine for over 5 now and its still doing a great job without any issues whatsoever. similar stories with all my friends/contacts who use the same filter.

there isnt a filter however on the market, that can clear a tank of debris faster than the fx5. not any of the very expensive ehiems can even come close.

i do know however that the eheims are made better and the access to parts are potentially second to none. that said there are many other types of filters that are not fluval that the forums members do rate more over than the ehiems.

i think you can pick up an fx5 nowadays off ebay for under £90 - when you consider you can pay around £50 for an internal, it shows you might as well go for the fx5 with its massive media baskets and second to none flow rate.

all that said, im sure you will be happy with the 2080 and looks like thats a good price also, although id rather get 2 fx5 for under £180 and really have an overkill filtering system - most filters nowadays really do a great job and have come a long way.

Before you buy the 2080 i would make sure it fits in your cabnet its a massive filter

the next point the 2078 has a flow rate of 1850 lph the 2080 only has 1700 lph

i have both and they are both good filters in their own right

5 years is quite a age considering they (Fx5) were introduced in 2005.

There is: eheim 2262 900 gph and 23 liters of media. FX5 has 5.9 liters of media

Depends the 2078 can maintain 700 liters per hr with the computer set up to maintain the flow. it only reaches 1850 at pump head when put to max and the computer told to switch off (yellow top triangle turns on). Also with media/hoses the 2080 does circa 1200 l/h and the 2078 does 1050 l/h max.

Clearly the fx5 looks bigger than 5.9l. The foam counts as media also

I aws going to get an FX5 but it was 1cm too wide to fit in my cabinet
I decided to treat myself and went for the Eheim 2080 instead ( just fits inside the cabinet! ) and I can honestly say I've never looked back, simple to set up, holds masses of media and feels like it'll last for 100 years!

Thats what I have read, that the 2080 has a higher flow rate, not on paper, but in actual operation, plus I do not want the potential issues associated with 'the computer'.
Whatever, I have bought the massive 2080, and have checked and it does 'squeeze' under my trigon tank....
Just wondering where to position the 2 intakes now... prob. one in each corner of the bow front. and the return at the rear corner firing straight forward.

Thanks for your help,,

Well the 2080 arrived; its HUGH !!

Luckily I had done my homework and it fits under the tank in the cabinet perfectly.

Its been up and running for about a week now in my existing set-up, and seems to be working well.

Was very noisy on initial fire-up, but seems to be quietening down now.
