Which Direction Should Your Powerheads Be Facing?

After a trip to the lfs today I've noticed their powerheads are all tilted upwards towards the water surface and not actually directly pointing at the live rock. Anyone got some information on this, mine is only an 18g so I don't want my fishies to always be in a current if they don't want to be!

Yes, most have it tilted to give some surface aggitation and so that the flow bounces off a surface, usually the front or side
