If I were you I would really pack your tank with other fish, just to keep the aggresion down, like putting some yellow labs in there with them, and maybe seeing if you could find some malwi trout, they look cool when there big, alittle stange looking when they're ju. but cool. The old 1" to gallon doesn't really apply to chilids, at least with all the research I've done and the people I've talked to, you want them to be packed and not fighting or territorial. I've got like ohh about 25 fish in a 55 gallon, and they aren't too mean, and pretty much leave each other alone!

definitely don't get a malawi trout, they reach adult sizes of 18 inches, and require atleast a 6ft, 180 gallon tank. if the conversion website is correct, your 42 uk gallon is a little over 50 us gallons, but gallons don't mean much when it comes to cichlids, you need a tank with a largefoot print (lengthxwidthxhight). first you need to decide if you want old or new world cichlids. old worlds, such as your Electric Blue Johannii, can be over stocked heavily to break up aggression as long as you have really good filtration, most recommend atleast 10x turnover and hour. new world cichlids, blood parrot, like space so youre only looking at a pair or maybe 2. for old worlds you usually need a 4 foot long tank, in a tank that size you can stock around 12-20 fish, depending on size and filtration.

i know this is probably a jumbled mess, but any other questions please ask and we can try to help you out..

thanks for your advice

I think some poor advice is being given. First off, Parrots are technically South American ( depending if they are the actually existing ones, or the hybrids). I would take the parrot back to the store, and the johanni, and just get some Kribs or something like that, plant the tank, get some shoaling fish ect. How long has your tank been set up?

about 2 months

Okay, I just did a conversion. You have about 50 US gallons of water. Now, if you keep the Johanni, you can sex it, and purchase the appropiate number of the same/opposite sex. Then I would buy some Yellow Labs, Peacocks exc. But you NEED to have ALOT of hiding places.
