Hi. I found an old Petcetera brand air pump in my fish drawer yesterday, so I attached it to an airstone, and plugged it in. It works great, (I HAVE used it before...) but the only problem is... It's really loud. I got it with this 1 gallon fish tank starter kit, (which I didn't even use, because the tank is obviously way too small...) so it's a really cheap store-brand pump. I want to get a new, quiet pump, because my tank is located in my room, and I can't sleep with the constant machanical noise. I put the pump in different places to see if it vibrated less or more depending on where it was, but it's best on top of my filter.

Does anyone know any good brand name air pumps that I can get in a Canadian Pet Valu, Petcetera, Petland, or Walmart? I want a quiet(er), cheap(ish) one ($30.00 max.) that I can put in my room without having to worry about the noise.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, and I am going today, so please help quickly!
Thanks!

Thank you. How much power would I need? I have a 20 gallon tank.

I was reading a really old topic on this forum, and apparently, tetra airpumps aren't very good, but it never said why. I think one of you guys answered that question...? What IS wrong with tetra brand air pumps?

I got a whisper 20 gallon airpump. (tetra brand.) I tried it out, and it's extremely quiet, but I've heard that it's not a good brand to buy...? Why is this, and is that true?

i have the 300 version, they are very powerful and the bubbles breaking the surface make me think ive left the cooker on
they also look nice sitting on top rather than the older types :)

incidently i cant hear the pump at all, just the bubbles ( but then again this is a bare bottom tank for now, so bound to be a bit noiser )

i have only used tetratec and more recently eheim. my experience with tetratec wasnt good it was so noisy i had to sit it on tea towels and sit other tea towels on top of it to dull the noise and vibration . even then it was still loud at times . and whats more the rubber diaphragms tore after about 3 months. i wasnt impressed at all.

so i bought a twin outlet eheim and the difference is incredible no need for padding , and even when i open the cabinet its near silent. it also comes with 2 diffuser type thing almost like plastic airstones which are adjustable for bigger/smaller bubbles and each outlet also has its own adjustment too. plus it was about a fiver less than i paid for the tetratec.

i hear rena pumps are good but cant comment as i have never used 1.

I have one made by "Sera" from a UK shop but with what I believe is a US plug and the relevent adapter. It again is so quiet the bubbles breaking the sirface drown it out.

I have a tetratec & rena in the house now, side by side the Rena is the quieter unit.

Thanks. I like my tetra pump. It's kinda loud, you're right, but I actually find the sound soothing. When the rubber feet wear down -- well I'll deal with that when the time comes... By the way, do airstones cause water cloudiness? Ever since I added my 3.00$ blue airstone, my water turned extremely cloudy, but it might've been that good bacteria killing medication I used... But my tank's never been this cloudy, even with good bacteria killed before!
