I am starting up a 30 gallon tank, and I would like to have a nice, large piece of bogwood as the main decoration. Where can I find this? Neither of the LFS here have anything I like, and even what they do have is way overpriced.

Also, it would be too large to boil it. I am planning on soaking it in a trash can outside to get it waterlogged and get the tannins out, but do I still need to boil it somehow?

I heard if its too big to boil, pour hot/boiling water over it and scrub it down. Or fill your trash can up with hot water if possible and scrub it with a potato brush. Im busy finishing one bit of small bogwood by boiling it, the other bits too big so its in a bucket of hot/boiling water with clingfilm over the top. From what iv heard it takes weeks or months for the tannin to go when just in water by itself.

I boiled my small bit of bogwood 6 times at full temperature from 25-40 minutes each time. The bogwood isnt giving out as much tannin now, i also left it overnight in the pan in the boiled water with the lid on, when i woke up the next day it had a little bit of tannin in but not much, so iv boiled it again and its sitting in the pan again with the lid on. I want the tannin completely gone before i put it back into my tank.

Oh and i also heard something about adding salt to the water, which iv did a few times. Not sure what this does or if its effective, but you could read up on it.

The main thing i dont like about forums is people ask questions and either dont have the profile location or add it into their post

adding a location makes life so much easier for people to respond to :good:

I got all my bogwood from e-bay at a good price including postage

I wouldn't think location is needed for this question, I was really expecting either "go to a different lfs" or "go look in the woods" or something along those lines.

But, since apparently it is needed, I am in Florida.

You may be able to get some driftwood off of a beach, but that stuff will have to be prepared for your tank. I'd bake it in the oven if it's a large piece and it would have to be soaked in a big bucket for a while to waterlog it. Make sure that if you're collecting your own you scrub it down well with a clean brush and either boil or bake it.

There are lots of places to buy driftwood online, you can often get it off of e-bay but the trouble is that every piece looks different. Buying from a LFS is the safest way to make sure that you get something you like and know that it will be safe to use in your aquarium, the only trouble is that most purchased bogwood/driftwood is very expensive.

Well, if there is a lake near you then I am sure that you could find some big bogwood there. Last weekend I went fishing and found a great 35 pound piece, it was about 3 feet long.

I wouldn't buy it online unless you can see it. I bought several pieces for my new tank and ended up using none of them and giving most of it away as it wasn't the look I was after. I finally found some redmoor wood online that I liked the look of. Luckily enough, I got two great pieces, I'm using one in my current tank and the other is currently soaking and will be used in a future setup. You can see it here. I appreciate you are in Florida but it might give you ideas as to what is available. There is a forum with some pics of comleted planted setups using this and other pieces of wood in the gallery/journal sections. I remember seeing some great looking wood that was available in the US on a thread on this very site. Do a search for bogwood and I'm sure the thread will turn up.

I'm not sure exaclty what types of locally found wood is suitable (I seem to remember oak isn't but birch is for example). If you do find some branches that are suitable, I would scrub them, bake them in the oven for an hour or so to dry it out and then leave it to soak to make sure nothing leaks out. I went for a walk through the woods the other day with the dog and found several interesting pieces and picked some up on the local beach as well. In the end, I gave up on the idea as it sounded too much like hard work and just bought the wood mentioned above!

I hope you find what you're looking for.

So is it then possible to go to a bog and pick up some and just boil the life out of it?

I doubt the OP will still want any wood as they were last on the forum 7 years ago.
But you could place an ad for your bogwood in the Classified section of the forum.
