Thinking about purchasing a 20 gallon long tank or a 29 gallon tank. My question is are the tanks carried by the big box stores a lesser quality than what is carried by local (mom and pop) stores for the same brand? Which brand is your favorite?

I got both my 20g long and my 29g at the local PetCo, during the $ per gallon sale. They aren’t really that high quality, but they hood up very well.

Essentially, you get what you pay for. The more expensive the tank, the better the build quality is. (Higher quality glass and better silicone job)

I just moved - a 9 hour drive with a lot of tanks (I run a large and very fun fishroom). The thinner glass bargain tanks I have (had) didn't fare well, although the fact it was -27 outside didn't help. As they thawed overnight, I got hairline cracks in 7 of them. They're done for.
All of my older, heavier glass tanks made the transition perfectly well. which I take as a lesson.
I made a connection with a local store whose owner I respect, and paid slightly more for better quality tanks (brands don't matter as I'm in another country). So if I'm keeping tanks in the house (I use a garage so spills are less of a worry) I would go for quality. I am a cheapskate, but looking at my stock, every single tank I have ever had that cracked was either a no name bargain deal, or a ... no name bargain deal.
If the price isn't wildly different, I would go with a smaller store I liked because they need the money these days. It might be different if you were buying a dozen tanks, but a few bucks more on one tank to keep the pet chains from destroying the hobby is an investment. If the fish breed and you suddenly want 327 more tanks, then the super bargain thinner glass ones might be an option.

The dollar per gallon sale is no more. Now they decided to do a 30% off

Oh, I was unaware of this. 30% off is still a great deal, for an already inexpensive tank.

Another thing I didn't mention before, is Craigslist. There are usually a lot of great deals on there, including free tanks!
