Hi Guys

As some of you will know I have had trouble trying to get hold of ammonia.

I have been to both boots and homebase today, homebase have stopped the ammonia they sell in nearly all their stores. Boots today said it will no longer be available as far as they know, it is also showing out of stock online.

So does anyone know anywhere else to try, and can it be shipped? I have heard it can't really be ordered online as it has to go via a special post/courier service.

My second question is simple I guess, my tank's heater is set to 30 degree's, yet the external thermometer is stuck at 26. It's been on for 48 hours now and hasn't moved. Do you think it's just because it's external, measuring the tank's glass heat instead?

Thanks :)

cant help with the ammonia, but id get down pets at home or somethign tomorrow and get a submersible thermometer, only 3 or 4 quid when i got one a couple of months ago. i ignore what it says on my heater, the submersible thermometer will always give you the best indication of your tank temp.

hi,

I got mine from boots on Saturday so I guess I was lucky if they are discontinuing it, the next place I would suggest would be a large supermarket or something similar.

In regards to your other question one of the other members will be a long soon and help you out, I've just started my tank so cant be much help unfortunately

Yeah, I have tried Asda and Tesco, both of which also said they don't do it, Tesco did one, but with all the fragrance crap in it.

sainsburies? waitrose? morrisons? maybe you might have better luck with these store, equally ammonia is used with cleaning so im sure somewhere will do it!

Don't have any of them near me, Going to try local pharmacy tomorrow as some people think they will have it.

My local diy shop, the kind that sells loose screws from a little box, sells "jeyes kleen off ammonia multi purpose household cleaner" (that's a mouthful!). It doesn't say on the bottle, but their website says it's pure ammonia. If you have one of those shops, try there.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Anyone know what I can do in the mean time until I can find some Ammonia? At the moment the tank is a little cloudy, and I'm still waiting for test kit to be delivered.

This sounds like me last week :), is it a brand new tank and recently set up? If ot is it could be a bacterial bloom, i had one last week that last for about 3 days and then it went,

is the water milky white?

Yeah, New fluval edge with just some gravel at the moment. Yeah it's milky white, had a feeling it would do it, guessing it's a good bacterial bloom rather than bad? :p

just means that all the organic matter that is present in the silicon filter gravel etc that has leeched into the water is being essentially eaten, when all this has gone the bacterial bloom will die away

so i guess (as im also a beginner) it is a good thing!! :)

Boots DO sell ammonia, but mostly only online. See my signature for details.

Hi Tom

I have been to three of their stores today, all said they have stopped stocking it since January. They said it can be brought in online, but they said it hasn't been available online either for a while. (Which is true, it's out of stock on their site)

Luke you could try ringing boots h/o and inquire about future availability.

Keith.
