As the title says, wheres the best place (online or lfs) to get amano shrimp in the UK? I have a small tank (27 litre aqua 40) which I'm going to set up soon and I think it would look great with some amano's or other cool freshwater shrimp in there. I'll probably have a few small fish in there also, so nothing aggressive...

Advice on what and where to get anyone? Thanks!

I got mine from Maidenhead Aquatics near me. They often stock them. Have you tried your LFS? I think quite a few LFS sell them nowadays. Online-wise, Trimar have them in their current stocklist.

My local Pets at Home has generic sounding "freshwater shrimp". Now, having read some others experiences with P@H shrimp, they might be long arm shrimp who are particularly nasty when it comes to small fish :(

I'll ask at my LFS and see if they can get hold of them :)

How many cherry/amano shrimp do you think it would be ok to have in a 27L Aqua 40 tank, with maybe a small school of tetra's (4 or 5)? Filtration at the moment would be a Fluval 1+, with the idea of upgrading to an Eden or Resun small external canister filter later on.

Amanos don't add much to your stocking limit. in 27g, you could probably have quite a lot of them! I'd start with a small group of around 6-8, so you can watch how they behave and get used to taking care of them. If they're all happy and healthy, then you can get more. :)
They're tough little guys. Mine are happy in fairly hard water with a pH around 7 (though provided you acclimatise them properly, they can take a variety of water conditions).

Getting your LFS to order them in is a good idea -- though if you have a Maidenhead Aquatics branch near you, my local place always seems to have plenty of amanos in stock. :)

I've discovered another LFS which I've not used before, but when I called them they said they had Japonica shrimp, bumble bee and another which I can't remember :) The also stock tropica plants, so they are pretty much my ideal shop :D

I have another question though. I seem to remember reading that you shouldn't add shrimp to a newly cycled tank, is this the case? Do they need to go into a mature tank?

Which 1 is this, that has Bumble Bee - was it dobbies?

Never use Pets at home, unless you are gonna grab mislabelled fish that they put the wrong price on. Seriuosly the 1 nr me in Gallagher is full of thick as plank staff.

They are very sensitive (a bit like me really).

Put them into a tank they don't like and they will try to escape and start behaving like bloody lemmings. I lost quite a few during my newbie days! They are unbelieveable escape artists.

Very interesting little critters to watch...

They are usually the first critters to go in any of my tanks as part of an anti algae gang. My tanks are heavily planted from day one, so there is never an issue with cycling the tank first, but it is still immature. I have done this on three separate occassions without any losses.

I have an Aqua 40 tank with six Amanos in it, but I might move one or two on due to the potential lack of algae in there for them.

Dave.

Yeah, I had to wait a couple of weeks longer than planned before my amanos were happy in my main tank. Generally, they should be ok though, provided you acclimate them properly. If they're happy to sit still and eat algae, then they should settle in just fine.

Never put fan shrimp in a tank younger than 6 months though, or they may have trouble finding enough food.
