where is the best place to buy guppies and how much do they cost

i think 99% of the local fish stores will have guppies. But if you're looking for a specific type/color, then you probably want to go to aquabid.com.

at the fish stores like petsmart and petco, they're like a dollar to 2 dollars.

how can you not know? :p

Petsmart and other large franchise stores have guppies from $3-4 per pair. The Petsmart here charges $4 per pair for some very plain, mostly grey fish (male & female). For higher quality fish look toward your local fish store ranging from $3-5 per pair. The $5 per pair fish are usually a strain specific guppy such as a 3/4 black or a yellow snakeskin as supposed to the "assorted guppy" at Petsmart. For the ultimate in strains and quality... visit aquabid but be ready to spend $10-30 per trio. If you're going to breed, then start right and buy from aquabid or another reputable breeder. If you just want a few to brighten up your tank... many good finds can be had at your local store.

Don't forget to check eBay.. ;) There is usually a vast assortment of gups listed daily though the cost is mainly for shipping...

It's hard to say a specific store(some chains have good and bad stores). You really have to decide it for yourself, spend atleast 5 mins looking at the guppies each store has, check for any signs of disease or stress, look for the most active and feeding ones, etc. I've seen guppies range from $2-$5(fancy males).

I buy directly from breeders, and usually only from ones who have a good history of quality fish and good standings in the ifga.

Guppies are everywhere but really nice guppies are harder to find. Aquariumfishshop.com provides one way to shop for guppies online. The listings are sorted into different types of fish instead of being placed in one large category. I see IFGA stock being sold here regularly.
