Where Does It All Come From?

My Austrailian redclaw crayfish were moved into their new tank yesterday.

Their activity has increased as a result and they are much more visible.
The female with eggs onboard is constantly fanning them and what looks like rearranging them with her legs.
It's all fascinating to watch, and I think I'm going to be a proud parent soon.

However, my question is a bit base. Since I moved them, the bottom of the tank is virtually covered with pooh!!

I haven't changed their diet. I feed them a tiny amount of flakes daily, and a bit of chopped up turkey breast once a week.

I hadn't noticed it in the other tank before, but they are constantly pinching off little black coilers.

Is this normal and if so, "where does it all come from?"

Regards, Don

Despite the fact that cray fish are quite big (relatively speaking) their internal organs are still very small. So a little bit of food can go quite a long way if you know what I mean ;)

With regards to if this is normal or not, I'm afraid I dont know. I dont know a lot (anything) about crayfish but I think they are pretty messy.

though i would hesitate to say Crayfish are messy, apart from the colour, never seen black Cray crap, all sounds right. but the colour does worry me. there is no need to feed a Cray, more often than every 2 days or so. but if you are trying to keep one in an community, every day is probably wise! they could do with a lot more veg. believe it of not, mature Cray are mostly veggie. they will eat anything that comes to hand, but have no real need for large amounts of protein. in nature they live on rotting veg matter, lol and anything else they find dead. so peas (fresh skinned), cucumber, courgette, eggplant or anything you fancy trying. you can afford to leave them in for a few days. the Turkey once a week is fine, but i would drop the flake, and start with some veg!

Thanks for the replies, I'll try some veg next feeding time.

Regards, Don
