So I wanted another schooling fish for the South American tank.

And before I went I wanted a bigger Tetra as opposed to Cardinal's and the like. Anyway I settled on Buenos Aires Tetra, seem them before, nice fish. Possible aggresion problem, thought I'd give it a try, and in the respect they've been fine :good:

I thought I knew Tetra's pretty well, obviously not!

So I read a few articles before hand including the one here on TFF. But somehow one piece of information slipped the net.

These fish may eat plants

Bang, problem. Planted tank. They haven't gone insane eating but they have been having a bit of a nibble. So now I feel like an idiot. Might give them a few more days and see how they are, if things are bad, i'll have no other choice other than to swap them for another Tetra.

Just thought i'd let you know, I feel like an idiot. And a schoolboy error on my behalf. Please research properly. :good:

James.

I know how you feel, same thing happened with me and Congo Tetras :shout:

Don't wait. Seriously... don't wait. They aren't suitable for a planted tank full stop, even well fed they will decimate your plants.

I'd definitely swap them now.

Yes, its time to say NO, we need to put an end to this malarkey.

Joking, my Congo tetras ate all my plants within a week

Well I thought this morning, i'll give them a good feeding on frozen, flake, pellets, the lot. That will surely fill the little buggers up. But as im sat here, they are having a little snack every so often. And there are 8 of them, and they aren't small either!

Like I said, a couple of days observing and i'll decide wether or not they are going back! :good:

Sorry Tetra's, not giving up my plantedness for your greediness!

James.

My congos don't touch my plants :S

Shame about the Buenos Aires tetras, really nice looking fish.

what a bummer

stranger one about the congos as I;ve never had them eat plants either

It is a shame really, lovely fish. They are the best shoaling fish i've ever had, really impressed.

Ahh well, a few days and we'll see :good:

James.

Have you tried feeding them vegetable flakes or putting lettuce leaves in to tempt them away from the plants? I've not had this problem so I'm not speaking from experience... Good luck!

What!
Plants is about the only thing my Congos eat, I feed them everything, but at the end of the day, they still rip bits of my plants. Grrr :shout:
