I was just curious how often people replace the heaters in their tanks. I know the obvious response would be only when they stop working, but I have read lots of stories of heaters taking all the fish with them when they die. This may be a bit paranoid & premature but I have grown quite attached to the little fellows in my tanks, so I dont want to find out the heaters needs replacing the hard way ;)

If it makes any difference to the heaters life expectancy I have 2 Juwel tanks, 1 with the old style heater & 1 with the newer version.

Thanks for any info you guys can give :)

The problem with juwels tanks is that the tanks themselves are well made, but the equipments not up to much.
Its usually the powerheads that tend to fail first.

Alot of members are now ripping the black boxes out like myself.
Replacing them with internal filters and heaters, if you rip the box out the heater no good and have to replace it or or buy a heater guard.

Its always wise to have a spare heater in stock epescially with juwel tanks.

Or buy two half-powered (ie 2 x 100w heaters for a tank requiring a 200w heater) heaters so if one goes wrong it won't fry the contents of the tank.

I've always thought that sounded ideal. Someday the dream tank: big, with 2 external filters and 2 heaters... sigh.
