Do I clean my filter during a water change, e.g. do my partial wc, and rinse the filter in the water I just took out of the tank, then put them back in and dump out the water. Thanks again...

That sounds about right. Don't use tap water.

We use a bucket for the water change, so before pouring it down the drain, take the filter medium out and squeeze it in the tank water, to get rid of the solid stuff in the filter (i'll let you work out what it is/was!)
