My friend is looking to get a couple of dojo/weather loach, and maybe a few hillstream loaches to clean the tank.

Whats the minimum tank recommended?

Thanks in advance!

I'd say a minimum tank of 20 US gals.

Yeah, thats what I heard too. Are they big waste producers? I got a pair today for my tank and now they've made me overstocked, when I was told on another forum they're almost negligible because of the little waste they produce?

I've got in my 45 US gallon tank now 4 fancy goldies, 1 hillstream loach, and 2 dojo/weather loaches. Am I heading for disaster? We're overfiltering, but I've just upgraded from a 4 gallon to a 45 and I'm dreading to hear I'm going to need to make more changes haha.

My friend was hoping for a 5 gallon tank too for her setup. That's not gonna happen now :X

Agreed with The-Wolf on the 20g. Lot's of water movement (via a submersible pump perhaps) is greatly appreciated.

I think you're ok for the 45g, but definitely stocked. Keep up those water changes and good luck!

Awesome.

Yeah, we have lot of water movement going on, there is a current in most areas of the tank, but there is still room for the fish to take a breather. But yeah, I'm aware it's overstocked mind you, and the water changes are regular. It's worth it to see these guys all playing with each other.

Thanks for the advice.

For the 45 gallon tank, do the following to help with your stocking issues. I agree with the modernhamlet, with good filtration and water changes your fish will be fine, but if you were to obtain some cheap strip lighting (Anything over 40w of light on the tank is good) and grow duckweed on the surface, then that will help with water quality and combat alage.

That's really cool. We've got 38w currently, so, I guess we can grow a little duckweed? How does it help?

I wouldnt want it to cover the whole tank because on that limited lighting a few plants are growing, but I could use a pond feeding ring to grow it in I guess.

Duckweed doesn't need much light. It'll prolly do just fine under that light, as it floats within inches of the bulb.

Because duckweed is a plant (and a fast growing one at that), it uses nitrogen in the water to grow. This nitrogen is generally in the form of nitrate. Plants basically keep the tank much more stable and less prone to crashes or mini-cycles.

Once you have duckweed, you always have duckweed though. You only make this decision once. Removing it entirely from a tank usually involves a ton of work.

Many fish do generally appreciate the cover too. I had a pair of pearl gourami that thrived in a 29g (25w btw) with duckweed. Added bonus: duckweed stablizes bubblenests by slowing the surface current.

Sorry, had more to say than I thought.
