I have quite a large outdoor pond with about 30, maybe 40 fish and the other day I noticed one was looking odd.

This shubunkin, Orange, has really bumpy skin..

I checked all the others and couldn't see any more with this skin problem. Would it be contagious?

Whilst I was checking, I saw my favourite fish, Stubby had exposed gills. Is it likely he just got caught on something?

[sorry- what's wrong with *'these'* shubunkins]

Hmmm, it's not an obvious one is it... Do any of the fish in the pond have fins split? Can you see if the gills are swollen or it is just the cover that's bent? It sounds like it might be a fluke infestation.

Flukes live in the mucus of a pond fish and as the scales are under the skin if the flukes are really bad i suppose they could cause this but the best thing to do is perform a skin scrape or get one done!
