I recently picked up some neon tetras from a local store and noticed today one has significantly less color and a torn up fin, is he just being bullied or sick? if he’s sick, whats the issue? below is just him and then a lower quality photo of him compared to a normal one

Something serious happened to his tail, There's nothing much you can do besides keeping great water quality.

Wen healing The fish might grow a minimal fin and bones replacement but, You can call him Short-Tail, cause he's going to be that way for a long time.

If it's bulling, it's not another tetra... What else do you have in the tank ?

i have some gold barbs, red eye tetras, a female betta, black neon tetras, ember tetras, and then some cory cats and SAE for cleanup
i watch my fish for hours a day and i’ve never once seen the female betta or barbs nip at another fish, 0 aggression from what i’ve seen

Can you isolate that fish in another container for a while. does he act normal, eating following the crowd ?

If loss of color, white patches and spinal deformity, lumps or cyst, difficulty swimming, gets thinner. signs appear.

I don't want to sound alarmist, but it looks rough and if there is really no aggression, my paranoid mind topples immediately to NTD and I promptly remove the fish and QT until further development.

all i’ve got for quarantine is a 5gal bucket and i don’t really have anything to filter/heat it
hes acted normal, ate fine, been with the school all day
only thing is hes lost a little color and has white patches on his tail, i assumed it was bite marks but i don’t have a fish big enough to do that so idk

i too was/am paranoid of NTD though cause i’ve got 70 fish in my tank (75 gallon) and really don’t want any disease to spread

If the fish continues to act normally and is active and the wound starts to heal, there's good chance it was an accident. Even between tetras there will be a pecking order that will establish and some contender are just not bright enough to know when to stop and will come back for a beating everyday. Neons are more of slammers than nipper when "fighting"... more of chases and darts.

Sometimes fish gets crushed a little when netted by non-caring staff. Receiving fish that has been mishandled is not so rare. if not mishandled right in front of you.

For the moment consider it as an open wound and good water quality and good food is the best remedy.

If the fish develops secondary infections, I really suggest any cheap setup you can concoct to isolate it, so you can use adequate medication without dosing the tank. Blasting a whole aquarium for one fish fungus is...........

Have a 1 minute per gallons prayer every night when going to bed.

Although the fish does appear to have been nipped, I do think there is a good possibility that NTD is in there. I would be on the alert to other individuals showing systems. That is one nasty disease, and not much to cure it. I hope I am wrong.

really? do you think i should remove him? as i said i have 71 fish so it would be absolutely deadly if it was NTD

i’ve also noticed another tetra has a little bit of his tail fin beat up so i’m pretty sure it’s just a wound
