There is a small snail, Menaloides tuberculata, that many of us know can breed very prolificly in an aquarium. I have been told that they're really no threat to the ecology of a tank and can actually benefit the life cycle by helping to break down uneaten food, dead leaves and any other unwanted debris that can increase the toxic levels of the water. Is this true? And if so why are so many people bent on eradicating them? In my tank they only come out at night, and I think that my botia's constant activity of digging them up and feasting on them keeps there population down. But I really don't mind them at all, in fact I find them to be quite charming little creatures.
