What's Wrong With My Platy?

it looked submissive - it looked like she was saying back off, don't hurt me. Your orange female in the picture looked exactly the same as the one I'm having trouble with.

She's hiding in her corner again this morning :(
Mine tilts to the side, raises her backfin and shivers when rebelling, and lowers the backfin and the tail when being submissive (like in the pic, but before she did that, she was annoying the male with the shiver dance, as you can see he has that murderous look in his eyes and his body is curved in an S-shape).

Moving her is a good idea. I think females prefer to be left alone than with a male anyway. Wish I had thought of making a girl-only tank (well, Tzuppy would be an exception, but he's no swordtail so no problem lol).

she's in the small fry tank and seems a lot happier. She's not alone in there, she's got a tiny guppy (which she's tried to eat and gave up) and 4 other platy babies. It'll give her a break if nothing else. She can just relax.

Meanwhile ... the male I mentioned is actually becoming a bit aggressive. My male guppy keeps putting him in his place though

Lol, trying to eat a guppy. Reminds me of when my hoplo met my male swordie, first thing he wondered: "Can I fit it in my mouth?" and when he saw that the swordie wiggles, he ran to a corner and was like "OMG! Not food!"

she's now got white stuff around her mouth and her gills look grey. I think she's a goner to be honest. I'm getting the clove oil ready to be honest.

I've had her a year nearly. She's given me some lovely babies but I think she's had her time now.

Feeling a bit sad

oh I don't get it.

Just gone to her to check and the white stuff that was around her mouth has gone!!

Clove oil going back in the cupboard then

That's not a reason to clove-oil a fish though... that's mouth fungus treatment time if it were actually fungus.

really? I thought mouth fungus meant curtains? Oh well I think she'd been eating some algae off the plants. I'm still watching her. I'll see how it goes.

However I look at it I know she's nearing the end of her life. She's not eating much now and seems really slow. I would much rather let nature do it's thing than euthanize but at the same time if she's suffering - or I think she's suffering and her quality of life has gone it's kinder to end it sooner than nature

Treatment:

Treatment
Change water
Vacuum gravel
Add aquarium salt
Treat with copper sulfate or antibiotic
Discontinue carbon filtration during treatment
according to a website.
You might be confusing it with mouth rot - a problem that would really make life for a fish harder or next to impossible due to feeding problems. Mouth fungus is columnaris.

If only it were that easy for us humans to request that as old and broken / damaged... I cannot kill anything I care for or sometimes certain critters such as spiders (which I frequently set free) so I'm biased when it comes to euthanasia anyway. I may be seen as irresponsible, but what about humans refusing other humans death? Double standards.

I'm for euthanasia in humans too. I have a debilitating illness myself but it won't kill me but I can see a time when enough will become enough and I'll want out.

I realise it's a dodgy subject so I'll say no more than that.

Back to the fish. She's happily swimming around the fry tank at the moment so while she's happy and swimming around euthanasia is far from my mind

I'm at the other end though, I don't know why but I take the warrior's approach when it comes to life.

Anyway I hope you get better. And glad that your fishy is ok too. I'd probably cry a whole night if (or more like when) my beloved hoplo would die.

When ever my mollies do that, my females fight back! One of them even got a torn dorsal fin, but it healed in a day  . They don't like to be bossed around! But your female just seems old.

My swordie also used to get torn pieces of the tip of her fin if the fight was taking too long. They usually peck the center of their body on each other (sometimes she picked scales off the male, so I understand why he was mad enough to pick her dorsal fin back then).
Last night I caught her doing the shivery dance again but no fight happened. That's her dorsal standing straight up when she does it, the male felt insulted too and started to form the S body, then he ran away.

well she's a lot better. This morning I did a water change on the fry tank and what did I find?

One single, lonesome, orange platy fry. It wasn't there before that's all I know ... I'm not sure it's still there now tbh.

I'm now left wondering if I should put her back in the main tank or leave her where she is

she's gone back in with the others in the big tank and the little fry is still there aswell.

All's well that ends well :)
