Trying to figure out what's going on with this platy? I just noticed a problem this morning. Almost looks like eggs are hanging out? Anyone know what's wrong & if there's anything to be done?

Here's another pic

Most likely she's miscarried; ie, laid the eggs when they should have hatched out internally and then been born.

Is she in a breeding trap? I ask because they're often too small and stressful for the mother fish which can cause a miscarriage.

That's what I meant lol miscarry not abortion. She's only in one right now so that I could get a good look & take some pictures. We have a 100 gallon tank with a lot of plants & decorations so it's almost impossible to get a picture otherwise & she kept hiding in the back. I noticed she looked funny this morning & since I decided I better put my pregnant guppy in a breeder net (she was being harassed even more than usual & ended up dropping fry with a few hours) I decided to try & catch the platy so I could get a good look.

So if she did miscarry which is kind of what I was guessing happened will she be ok? do i need to do anything etc?

Ok well nevermind about what to do about her because she just fell over dead now. Since they were still attached to her could this be why she died? Or do they usually die when they miscarry? I haven't had fish since I was a teenager & never had any live bearers so the entire process is new to me & then come to find out we have a bunch of live bearers. I've been trying to learn as much as I can as we go alone. 1st fry drop today & now 1st miscarriage.

Thanks for the info

Oh, I am so sorry she died :(

They don't normally die when they miscarry, no; but amight not be what was wrong with her; I was just making an informed guess.

We all lose the occasional fish for no reason that we can find; try not to feel too disheartened.

Make sure you do a couple of extra water changes, just in case there's something going on there.

Ya for some reason some of our Tuxedo platys have some weird discoloration on their scales, I'm pretty sure it's not ich, dealt with that a month or so ago. We've had some turn over rate in our tank but it's usually not too bad(usually if we buy some new fish we have maybe 1/4 die in the first week). I think we're pretty much through buying new fish cause we're close to capacity we believe. We have turned our heater off but are still having problems keeping the temp down when the weather heats up. With water changes & putting frozen bottles of water in it's not too bad but it's just frustrating. We need to do another water change but not sure how we're going to do it with the babies in the net breeder. We weren't sure if we wanted to buy another tank or not for the fry but since I got them all separated yesterday before the guppy had them we decided to buy another tank. We're going to do that tonight but I know we need to try to cycle it before we put them in there.

So anyway, thanks for the info. I've got to go read more about setting up a fry tank now :p
