Whats with the * in Pl*co??

The * in ple*co is for luck - the saying goes that someone wrote pl*co in full and it died soon after - so a * was put instead of the "e" and it caught on with everyone. At the top of beginners is a pinned topic - usefull abreviations. Check it out and you'll most probably find all you need, if not, post more questions. BTW (by the way), welcome aboard.

placosumus is abreviated as plEco because plAco sounds like crap but for those of us who care about taxonamy pleco is wrong and it should be abreviated as plAco but it still needs to be pronounced plEco so a compramise was struck (YAY! every body a loser!) and * stands in for (A/E)

Oh yeah. What I said about a pinned article on abreviations was for names of fish. I.e. Oto, ADF, Plec, etc.

It could even be added to the existing thread.

Yeah, my understanding is the '*' in pl*co is just a silly superstition thing that started among fishkeepers back in the fledgeling days of the internet, and it just stuck. The story was that to spell it with an 'e' instead of a '*' was to curse your own pl*co with ill fortune, even death.
