Hi all I need a little help with my guppy. I got up this morning everything was fine swimming around playing with the other 2 I've come home and its in the bottom corner resting on the gravel under some leaves. I've no idea if its male or female but its a lot fatter than the other ones! It's just staying there not moving a lot at all.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Thanks

Unfortunately, that's a pretty vague description, so it doesn't narrow it down much.

First instinct is that it's a female about to drop fry, but it could be something far more serious. THe fish's scales, are they sticking out, so it looks a bit like a pinecone?

How long has the tank been set up?
How was it cycled (or how is it being cycled)?
What are the current vital stats?
Anything new in the tank recently?
What's your maintenance regime?

I upgraded my tank last week. I've had a algae bloom at the start of the week and I did a 40% water change yesterday. All my other fish are happily swimming around as far as I tell everything seems fine (using test strips). They are a couple of new ordiniments in the tank. Apart from that nothing has changed from the old set up to this one apart from filter is new but I transferred my old media over as I got advised to.

Female guppy is much less colourful than the male. She has a normal anal fin whereas the male has the pointy stick-like fin. Is it a female?

I can't really tell as its just staying so still on the bottom, sorry for the lack of info.

In which case, sorry for the lack of help.

Was the original filter cycled?

Yeah the other tank had been running for around 5/6 month do it was well cycled. Maybes it's just a stress of the move or I'm expecting fry. My only problem is I'm away for the weekend and the mother hasn't a clue bad timing I guess.

Try doing a large water change >50% and see if it helps. That's about all I can say given the lack of detail.

Would 2 larger water changes not upset the fish and the environment?

No not really. If the guppy is in distress, often the best thing for it is some nice fresh water.

Without a proper diagnosis, I can't suggest anything else.

Ok thanks for the info. At least found out how to tell the difference between male and female guppies.

Sounds like its a female about to give birth, but its tough to tell. Any more information here?
