i went into a newly set up lfs the other day and saw some of the coolest fish ever! they were yellow, and some had a dorsal tipped with a browny colour. does anyone have information on these fish (i think they were haplochromis or labidochromis). i want to get into cichlids because they seem awesome, and these may be my first purchase of this family of fish. any info on size, temparement, origins and feeding habits would be very much appreciated indeed. they were definitely cichlids due to the body shape, and i thought african fish were the colourful ones.

thanks all
scott

the ones in the dealers were a paler yellow, and there anal, ventral and tail fins were pure yellow, so i dont think they are, unless stress or incorrect water conditions can cause color loss in this species. or maybe its an age thing. hopefully ill go back soon because i really did like them.

thanx for the help on this.

i see you have a cichlid, tank whats it like keeping that? is there a lot of maintenance? i want to start cichlid keeping and i need to get as much info about it as i can. any advice here would be useful and appreciated.

Hi :) ,

I would suggest you do some research before you enter into keeping Africans :) .

take a good look through the below, which provides individual fish profiles, compatability, needs, ideas on stocking, ideas on tank set ups etc etc.....

It'll give you some decent grounding into keeping cichlids.

Any other questions you may have after that.....ask away :D .

hope this helps

It's good. Ours is a Mbuna tank and they are really beautiful. The amount of maintenance will depend on the amount of fish you have and the filtration you have.
Like Baldranger said, you need to do some research first and post any questions you have here. Good luck!

I agree with the guys, research is vital with these fish. However do it properly and you won't look back, these fish are incredible. :D

i have four yellow labs there great there colour is brilliant... we bought them from a shop that just had them up as "assorte Chichlids" i knew what there were though ..so i got a good baragin on them B)

Could the fish have been neolamprologus leleupi? Also, there are several mbuna species where the female is a pale-ish yellow while the males are blue. Were there any similarly-shaped blue cichlids in with them and can you describe those?

I also agree that you should do some research BTW ;) Cichlids can be a little more complicated than your average community fish.

no lol it turns there are actually yellow labs, they were just a different shade to the photo loafybones showed me, and the fins were much more yellow. im guessin its because they arent it water specially for them, with the correct pH and trace elements and minerals that are found in the rift lakes. Yellow Labs are Malawi (Nyassan) arent they? Ive seen that Malawi are the most agressive, and Tanganyikans the most peaceful. I havent read that much on Victorians but i gues theyre in the middle. What can be recommended as a "cichlid beginners fish" from Tanganyika?

ps thanks for all the help everyone
