We recently got 4 shrimp labelled as Japanese Algae Eating Shrimp, but I'm wondering if that's what they really are?
I guess that name is just another name for Amano Shrimp?
To me they just look like ghost shrimp, but since I'm new to the whole shrimp thing, of course I'm not going to be able to tell any difference unless it's glaringly obvious.
I'd post pics, but I can't get a good pic of them to save my life.
I can sorta describe them though.

3 of them are still sort of small, but they all have dark dots running down the side of their body. The rest of them is completely clear.. well.. cept for the poop :p
The 1 larger one we have seems to have this weird greenish/yellowish strip running along the spine area.

Also.... the shrimp seem to like hanging out around the heater. Just curious to know why if there is any reason :p

Where did you buy buy them from?
i know at petsmart they label amano's as Japanese Algae eating Shrimp

Yep that's where we got them from. It was the first time I've actually seen them at this petsmart so we got some. heh

Another question... how do you know if your shrimp are mating? I'm assuming we got 3 males and 1 female, or 2 females and 2 males since the one is alot bigger than the others.
We caught them yesterday doing something, but I dunno if it was just nothing or if it was mating or not. 1 of the smaller ones was hitching a ride on the larger ones back, and another small one was on the bigger ones side.
I say 2 females b/c the other shrimp was nearby but doing it's own thing.. so figured that if they were mating.. it would probably wanting some action too? :p heh I dunno *shrugs*

thanks for the replies!

Another question... how can you tell if a female is holding eggs or not? I think our female might be, but I'm not sure. I was going to try to get a pic of her, but of course now she wants to hide behind the heater -_-
I'll try to get one later on of her

You'll see the eggs on the female underneath her body. The little swimarettes they have on their underside will be where the eggs are held.

Amano Shrimp/Japanese Swamp Shrimp...latin name is caridina japonica :)

You can see the eggs here. First pic...the little white dots.

Alrighty... I just checked again and she is definitely holding eggs. She finally came out from hiding and I could clearly see them. How cool :)
I'm gonna read up on raising them to see if I can do anything. If I don't need a tank for the lil shrimpy I think I'm gonna try to raise some.

K I did some looking. I just don't have the space to try to raise anything. I wish we had something though b/c I'd love to try.
I just hate having this go to waste.. ya know?
Maybe another time!

Edit again...

Here's a blurry pic of the shrimp. I swear the water isn't green like the pic :p heh There is alot of algae though :\
Anywho.. you can't see it well, but you can still tell she's carrying them.

I only have 5 Amano shrimp, 4 of them female and at least one seems to have eggs at anytime. If you want to try raising the shrimplets there isn't any rush!
