Hope this isn't a dumb question. But the pet store told me to put snails in with my 3 goldfish. Is this a good idea or should I use something else??? I'm new at this

Welcome to the forums :) There are no special benefits in keeping snails with your goldfish, but nothing wrong with it either - unless they breed out of control of course! Were they trying to sell you snails to fix an algae problem or something?

Ya see I don't want them to breed out of control haha. And no there's not a algae problem I jus asked the lady if it was a good idea to put something like that in with them. But I've heard gold fish don't really need anything.

No, they don't; just a nice big tank with good filtration, other goldfish, and plenty of plants (elodea is cheap and easy) that they can rip up and eat :)

ok good to know ill look into that. since i just started i feel like the tank is so bare but i do have plants and huts and all that in there for them. it could just be because on my other 2 tanks i have they have backgrounds on them.

Goldfish really only need filteration, as they're quite messy.
If you're worried about things like algae, use the scraper.
What about just the 1 snail, so you dont have to worry about them multiplying?

thats actually reminds me of a good question i have. someone told me that snails can multiply by themselves?? true or false?

No i think they can change gender to suit the population so if its male heavy some will turn female and vice versa. You still need at least 2. But if you had 2 male then one would change to female so they could breed.

I think some species of snail are hermaphrodites, so you can breed with any 2 examples

Haha they're your answer!
If you're worried about over-population- sell them or donate them to the LPS.
