My new reef is running at 26.7 and i cant recall if thats slightly too high or not

what do you chaps run yours at?

Simon

For me, the key is a stable temp rather than if it's too low or too high. I try not to let mine fluctuate too much. A bit of a struggle now that it's Winter. Or you can adopt a gradual seasonal swing. Like a Winter temp that's cooler & a warmer summer temp that's a few degrees warmer.

it is stabl;e but i know that you can have it too hot or cold for corals and just wondering what the ideal scale is? :good:

I think a stable temperature between 24-27 is fine for most corals. See, I converted to Celcius for you and everything. :D

That's very interesting. I'm finding it very difficult to keep my temp below 27 because we're going through summer atm. I sometimes have to resort to floating an ice brick in my tank just to try to keep it from boiling my inhabitants. I have since heard that other local reefers do the same thing. BTW Simon, I've been reading your journal, very interesting.

 , I didn't know that americans could speak in celcius. We'll convert you guys one by one. :hooray:

Regards,
Duncan

Not to thread hijack, but have you tried a clip-on desk fan instead of the ice bricks? Fans will struggle to make a dent if the humidity and temperature in the room are both insanely high, but otherwise it's a way to lower temperature more consistently than with an ice brick. In the past I used the ice brick method, but I switched to mesh tops and fans eventually for the lower maintenance and increased stability.

84F gets into danger zone. I run my tanks anywhere from 78-80F. Several degrees up or down in a day is actually fine for a fish. And when your power goes out or your heater stays on(will eventually happen, just a matter of when) the fish will be more used to some fluctuation so hopefully you can remedy the problem before it gets too out of hand.

26.7c is fine. Natural reef temperatures can range from 16c to 34c with the average been around 28c
