My friend has a 24"x18"x12" tank and she has 5 guppies, 3 black widow tetras and 1 common pleco. I have told her the pleco will get to big and she should take it back but the response i get is "I've had it six years haven't i?".
The pleco is about 8 or 9 inches and is forever going to the top of the water and what looks like sticking to it. I think it's either:
-not enough oxygen.
or
-hungry!
She doesn't feed it anything at all. It only get's algae from the sides!
This is beside the point. What i was asking about is the black widow tetras which is why it's in this section. I was just describing the background of the tank.

The issue is. 2 of the tetras have been hanging about by an ornament and if any other fish goes near it they chase them off. They keep turning round and "fanning" the ornament with their tails. I didn't think black widow tetras laid and cared for their eggs.
Please describe what you think is going on with the tetras.

tetras are egg layers so it could be possible that they are spawning. im not sure if there is any after care for the eggs though or fry.

doesnt your mate realise that a fish thats almost half the length of the tank is suffering, would she/he like it confined to a 10 foot room?

i doubt that the tetras have any after care for the fry, as i've read that the eggs must be removed from the tank to stop the parents eating them. you could break into the house and rescue the pleco. :ninja: why don't you encourage her to join here, so we can give her advise?

cheers :good:

The thing is...... the pleco is 6 years old s i'm afraid it's already stunted.
What i meant to say is i thought tetras were egg layers but i didn't know they looked after their eggs.

You are joking? she does not feed it?

Its wrong that because your friend has incurred 6 years of NEGLECT she uses that excuse not to remedy her cruelty and lack of human decency

Lets hope new life does not occur in your friends tank as that will mean more neglect.

I once took some algae wafers up for her to feed it with and she said "I'm not putting that in my tank!" So i said "why?" She replied "Because he get's enough eating all the algae. It would end up over feeding him."

Well good on you for trying to educate her :good:

It just proves you cannot teach some people  :sly:

Be a sneaky ninja, each time you go around your mate's house, slip a algae wafer into the tank when she's not looking!

Good idea bethk. I might try that.

I have no where to put the poor thing after though. He would have to stay in the bath!

I think they did lay eggs. I don't know if they hatched though.
