How long you going to keep your existing stuff? Selling it off straight away I presume for the funds?

James.

yep straight away , as soon as i find buyers its gone , then the new 1 can be ordered . only downside is that as i cant bankroll the new 1 without selling all my current gear , il then be 6 to 8 weeks without a tank , and when it does arrive il have to do another fishless cycle . altho that part i plan on getting around by cramming my spare internal filter with media from the externals and keep it running in a bin of water fed with ammonia , so ive got some mature media to kick start things .

why do you need to sell the malawis?

A couple of times now I have stripped down one tank, moved it and then set another one in its place including everything from water to filtration to livestock within 10 hours,

All you need are a number of large poly boxes, and an airpump with multiple airlines to go to each box.

this is the trouble when a thread gos to multiple pages , information gets missed . i have to sell my 100g and my 112L in order to finance the 6 foot . i cant order the 6 foot until i have the money have the money from the 4x2x2 . even if i didnt have to sell the 112L too theres no way it would happily house 20 malawis . its not just a case of moving out the 4 foot and moving in the 6 foot . i have to sell the tanks , then order the 6 foot which will take 6 to 8 weeks to arrive . i have no way of housing 20 malawais for 6 to 8 weeks , so in order to get the upgrade i have to make sacrifices .

As much as I love planted (you may guess from my sig!) I simply can't imagine how you'd manage it in a 6 footer, especially hi-tech. Just getting the flow right would be a total headache with dead spots everywhere, not to mention the pruning and the amount of CO2 and ferts you'd get through! I have to say if I were getting a 6 footer it would either be a low tech medium planted or a Cilchlid setup. I don't envy you having to make the dicision but I do envy you that 6 footer!!

the flow is just a case of more powerful pumps/powerheads etc the principals are the same just on a bigger scale . ferts you just use dry powders much cheaper way of doing it . about 20 quids worth of dry powders would last about 6 months . co2 again just get a big cylinder , expensive initially but prety cheap on refills.

on a tank that size common sense dictates that you would get the flow sorted before you did anything else . but as i said i will most likely be sticking with malawis tho i really enjoy them

It may be the same in theory but in practice it's a hell of a job! It's been hard enough for me to sort the flow on a 240l but the 120l is a breeze. Anyway it's a moot point as you're staying with Malawis :) . If only I had the spare cash I'd have had that tank off your hands tomorrow, those fish are stunning!

yeah dont get me wrong i know the principles may be the same but yep the actual putting into practice is another thing . i have been researching it a lot as it is an area of the hobby that greatly interests me

after much thought and deliberation , i have decided to shelve plans for the upgrade. at the moment selling the group of malawis that are giving me so much pleasure is too high of a price to pay for the sake of a bigger tank. so i have decide to set the empty 30g up as a high tech planted instead.
