Are you getting the pangio kuhlii? What other stocking are you thinking for the 40 breeder? If you are doing only p. kuhlii then you could easily add 20 to the tank, they're very small and have a minimal biolo load. These are very social loaches and you're going to see the best activity out of them with higher numbers. Also you are going to want to have the tank littered with leaf litter and possibly alder cones as they do like a tannin stained tank. Adding some floating plants to dim the lighting will also help to let them feel comfortable in the tank and increase their activity levels. Also they love to burrow, so a soft sand is the best substrate.
They also will like to try to get into filtration so be careful with the type of filtration you put on the tank.
I have had these loaches and other loaches of the pangio species for many years. There are a lot of fun if you have them in the right numbers and in the right water quality/set up.
