What type of snail would be suitable for a planted tank?

Mystery snail, ramshorn snails if you don't mind see jelly blobs everywhere. Nerites if you don't mind seeing white eggs everywhere (they are a pain to remove).

Mysteries would be my choice.

Hello. Zebra Nerite snails are really quite nice. They don't breed in fresh water and they'll get fairly large. The ones I've seen are brown with yellow stripes and are the size of your thumbnail. They'll cost you a little bit, but they'll live for a long time provided you keep the tank water clean.

10 Tanks (Now 11)

I like apple mystery snails, they grow quickly and also come in all kinds of different colours (if you like that kind of thing!).

How big is your tank? I like mystery snails, they have so much personality. I like to have one per 5 gallons (1 in 5g tank, 2 in 10g tank) but they don't need to be together and will live happily alone if you only want one. They get a decent size to, about a golf ball (or a tiny bit bigger) size. I also have ramshorn and bladder snails in my tanks and they are cool, but they do breed fast.

Will apple snails not eat plants? I'm wondering why they were banned over here got a while 🤔

They will eat plants but not excessively. I think they are banned some places because they can be invasive.
When I wanted to buy one, the dude told me they're more carnivorous and that I needed to make sure to feed them prawn and mussel...🙄

I only deliberately feed mine algae wafers and blanched veg a couple of times a week, I'm pretty sure they pick up any leftover brine shrimp/daphnia etc as well.

How big is your tank? What else do you have? I'm partial to ramshorn snails myself, but all the recommendations here are good, and even pond snails can be nice. It just depends on what you want.

Because one species of Pomacea snails was found in a river in Spain, so the EU banned the import and spreading (which was assumed to mean breeding them and selling them) of every species of Pomacea snail throughout the EU. Originally the EU legislators also intended to ban the import of plants from regions where Pomacea snails are endemic, but they settled for making it illegal to import such plants unless they had been treated with a chemical to kill snails.

I was gobsmacked when the UK government rescinded this legislation so soon after Brexit. I thought it would be at the bottom of the to do list and it would be at least 50 years before they got round to it.

Edit to add - Pomacea snails are only legal now in England, Scotland and Wales. They are still illegal in Northern Ireland.

🧐 priorities @Essjay! 😂

I have 2 nerite snails in my 29 gallon and 1 nerite snail in my 5 gallon tank.. They keep the glass totally free of algae which was a problem in both tanks.

My tank is ~13 gal, I’m getting the snails to start my silent cycle.
