Here's a picture of one of my new fish but I don't really know what type it is. the man at the shop said but I didn't hear him. Here's a pic:

And if it helps he apparently eats fish flakes, bloodworms and algae wafers. and I don't know for certain he's a boy.

Anyone know what type he is?

Gold ringed hillstream loach?? I have two :D

They like a good build up of algae in the tank to start off with, and tank needs to be well oxygenated and preferably kept at 25 degrees.

Really? They sold it to me as temperate...
Oh and I have no shortage of algae when I leave the light on... Mwahaha

iv had one of these sold to me as cold water, it died i never checked my LFS advice is normally spot on...

Oh great. Looks like I have two choices:

1) Presume they aren't hillstream loaches but are a very close relative and that they do prefer coldwater
2) Give them back to the shop.

Either way they'll end up in coldwater. oh dear.

Not sure but I think they prefer a good strong current as well. Maybe someone can verify, I would post in the loach section :) the loach ppl are very nice :good: GL!

kk thanks will do :)
Can I just copy this one accross or do I have to write it again?

It is a hillstreem and I have kept one for a little while, I have heard that they like cooler water with a strong current flow...mine has been fine in my 77 degree comunity tank, he hides sometimes but seems to be fine otherwise. I do have pretty heavy flow in my tank though...

Well my water is cooler... but it doesn't have a very high current flow. my mum says the guy at the shop called it a Vietnamese something-or-other.

http://www.loaches.com/species-index/beaufortia-kweichowensis This should give you some tips on keeping them, GL! he's cute :)

Hillstream Loaches should really be kept in tank specifically built up around them in order to suit their needs from what i know, they do not do too well in the average community.

They seem to be doing ok at the moment the lighter coloured one (Spotty) is always zigging all over the tank but the darker one (Stripy) hides a lot more. Whenever I put in algae wafers my platys eat them, but last night I left a bit on top of the filter where they sometimes go but the platys can't get to it and it was still there this morning (it's been removed now).

It is a Goldring Butterfly Loach aka Sewellia lineolata and although it does look like the normal hillstream loaches, it is tropical, albeit lower tropical (About 24 dec C i think) and well oxygenated.

They eat a looooot of algae and bloodworms and can be really quite territorial towards each other!
