I've been reading about betta (as I planned to start a community and planted aquarium in my 4ft tank (4 x 1.5 x 1.5)) and it has been said that betta doesn't require a filter because of the labyrinth. But since my setup will be a community aquarium with plants, can you please suggest what type of filter is suitable? if you could please include a link to the product, that would be most helpful.

thank you very much

Honestly, a major problem with bettas in communities is that any filtration aqequate for the rest of the fish will blow your guy around like a leaf... If you must keep the betta in there, grab an underwater filter and point the output towards the wall to baffle it.

Hi jarthel :)

Bettas don't need the extra oxygen that a filter provides by circulating the water at the surface but they do benefit from filtration since the beneficial bacteria in the filter media removes the ammonia and nitrates that come from the fish's waste products. On the negative side a strong enough filter for a big tank will, like kelly528 said, blow them around. Since they have such long fins and tails they don't have the strength to swim against it like more natural fish can.

If you are a new fishkeeper, please read through the pinned topics in the New to the Hobby section of the forum. The members who post in there will also be happy to answer any questions and help you get off to a great start. :)
