Not too sure,
but if its a male it may be a Plakat,
if female i'd say SuperDelta :)

thanks for your reply. i think he's a male because he does flare at the cories sometimes. i hope i'm right in saying that only males do that??

I agree, male plakat, possibly female super-delta. Can you tell us if he has a beard when flaring?

do you know how old he is?
looks like a young delta tail male to me. if it doesnt have a beard when flaring, a nice delta girlie.
love his color. ive got one just like him :)
cheers

I'd be inclined to say that is a halfmoon type female and a young one at that, how long have you had the fish?

how big is he? looks to be a young delta tail(at this point not superdelta-not enough 'spread' in his tail. if it is a young fish he might have some growing to do in those fins.
also could be female as others suggested but the ventras are fairly long? as asked above-does it have a 'beard' when it flares? if not, a nice delta girle.
lovely color..ive got one just like him!
cheers

thanks for all the replies! i've had him about 4 months and he is about 2 inches long. he is smaller than my other betta and yes, he does have a beard when he flares. he's very sociable and lives in a 94 litre tank with cories, shrimp, african dwarf frogs and coolie loach. he will feed from my hand and always comes to see me when i approach the tank. he's a really lovely little fish!

i've attached a pic of my other betta who i had to place in solitary (a 25 litre tank) after quickly discovering he had a taste for young cories. :(

the betta in question:
he is surely fully grown at 2 inches. when he flares, if his tail fin makes a 180 degree spread, then id guess hes a halfmoon plakat(hence his short fins). anything less than 180 he is a delta tail PK(ive never seen dtpk, but i guess its possible).
both bettas are very lovely!
cheers.
