At the local shop there are some that pace the length of the tank, some that stay constantly hidden guarding ornaments and caves, and some that sit in the corner of the tank at the bottom.

Besides personal taste, How do I know what Betta is healthy and well to be taken home. What should I look for?

:good:

I would go for the active ones.
Our LPS keep them in small cubbies above the main tanks, and water flows through all of them, so I also stay away from ones that are right next to sick/dead ones.

Yeah, leave the ones that are sat on the bottom or hiding. Pick the ones that are swimming around, hopefully they should come over to the glass to look at you. Check they are not too fat or too skinny, no pineconing, they can swim upright etc. Don't worry about a little tail damage, but if there is damage then check for signs of finrot - blackness to the ends.

the one that rushes to the front and gives you that 'buy me!' look  active and swimming around, one of mine did that little wiggle dance we all love so i had to have him
