I have recently bought three Corydoras Sterbai which I have had for three days. I asked my lfs what to feed them on and they advised sinking pellets. I have fed them the sinking pellets and also today a algae wafer disc but I'm uncertain if they are eating properly. They seem to graze on the sinking pellets and algae wafers.

Is there a more suitable food that I should be feeding them or am I feeding them properly?

What is best to feed them on as juveniles and as adults?

I also bought some tetra at the same time and it is more obvious that they are eating properly because they are surface feeders.

Thanks Teelie.

I have been crumbling the sinking pellets I've been feeding them.

I'll try some frozen blood worm.

Now that I have some algae wafers to use up would you recommend breaking those up as well?

Depending on the size, possibly. I have larger ones that I break up both to help feed the smaller ones and so there's more spread out for the other fish to eat. It does seem the smaller the fish, the bigger the chunk of food they go after though. :p The wafers I have are about the size of a finger tip but flat.

Thanks again.

The wafers I have are also that size.

Do bottom feeding fish graze or do they also eat things whole like surface feeders?

Should I crumble the food small enough so that they can eat the tiny pieces whole?

Sorry if these are stupid questions but these are my first fish.

No, not stupid questions. Surprisingly they are good ones no one ever asks. Most cories tend to graze or nibble on their food. Their mouths aren't very big so they bite little pieces off of their food. Juveniles are obviously even smaller so breaking down the wafers and pellets to a size they can eat in one bite is hard to do. I normally break my wafers down into 4-6 parts or crumble them though in my experience, making the pieces too small makes it harder to clean up left overs if there are any. They'll have no trouble taking a nibble off of even the large pieces once they begin to dissolve but for the sake of ease it's better to have crumbled edges that are easier for them to bite into IMO.

i agree with teelie.i have 9 sterbai and i feed them crushed up tetra prima and frozen bloodworm.

Thanks people.

Do you feed them once a day (say morning) using the crumbled sinking pellets and once a day ( say evening ) with the frozen blood worm?

If you were going to feed three juvenile Cory's twice a day, once with crumbled sinking pellets, would one crumbled sinking pellet be the right quantity?

Also, sorry to go on, but would they appreciate things like cucumber?

i have greedy fish so i feed 2-3 times a day.i have sand so its easy to see if there is any food on the sand for the cory's.i feed tetra prima or bloodworm on a random basis so my fish never get attached to one or the other.bloodworm in the evening then maybe no more bloodworm for a day or so.same with the tetra prima.i hate fussy fish, plus a varied diet is better for them.

I feed my fish every 2-3 days and usually I mix up what I give them. I have several types of dry food and the bloodworms. I tried zuchini once but they didn't go for it. I hear they'll eat cucumber but I don't know if they will or not. Try not to feed them too often either. It's better to under feed than over feed your fish. They've adapted to a life of scarce food and not one of plentiful food so they're better equipped to "starve" as it were rather than be fat and overweight.

Yep, or longer. I've been gone on trips for four or five days and come back to everyone healthy and happy but of course hungry though fish are never not hungry. :p

I've always had a Cory or two in every tank I've ever had.
except my Couple of Oscar Tanks, For Apperant Reasons.
And I've always fed my Community Fish Twice a day, Regular Flake Foods, and only Speciffically Fed my Corys Once or Twice a week, a few Odd Shrimp or alge Pellets, and they have always done, Just Fine.
Some say they won't eat off the "TOP" I've even had a few that would come to the Top and eat at the Edges of the tank, While I had One that would turn "UPSIDE" Down and eat off the Surface, As a matter of act that was the Only Way I ever seen him eat, and they've all done "JUST FINE"...
They are Very Adaptable Fish...
Good Luck with your Cory's.

Boy did Daddyfish ever hit that one on the head. It's a surprise a minute with fish sometimes. And people think fish are boring?

Cool thread. I always like to read up on meds and treatments. Thanks!
