I just wanted to start a thread about what options are out there for a person that has bred bettas and have too many fry to give away or house themselves. Please throw in your suggestions or ideas!

1) Sell to local pet shops (though most are obtained from select distributors)

2) Sell on Aquabid (or some fish auction to reputable buyers)

3) Give away to friends/family.

4) Give away as gifts (along with instructions on how to care for bettas correctly and if the person is aware of the gift ahead of time and can afford to care for them)

5) Maybe put an ad in the local paper.

(I think this topic is long overdue)

Sidenote: If you're in a tight bunch to get rid of some fry due to some unforseen occurance, while LFS's might not be able to buy the fry, most will readily accept donations.

Although some of your fry may not develop correctly, some lfs will take them as feed. (I know a lot of us don't want to think about that...)

Most lfs have there own supplier and will only give a credit note for fish they cant pay you money as they buy from their supplier and if they found out they may loose a contract with them and unless you can supply week in week out in the quantity they want they will not take them or the risk of loosing their main supply, and give you cash you buy something else with the credit a win win for them......if you cant look after all the fry and house them don't breed in the first place unless you can get someone else to take them from you unless they are known quality and you can supply parents and grand parent information most breeders will not take them as it could spoil a line that they have so if you cant do these things, just don't breed your fish at all.....its a life in your hands..........even if you are a

or kept fish for years it takes a lot of time and effort to do it and keep them all alive and well...... :D :D :D

A privatly owned lps near me sell their own bettas plus bettas that are bred by a local breeder. The local breeder fish are a bit cheaper, I'm not sure how much the breeder makes from that??
I personaly wouldn't sell fry to some of my lps chain stores as they don't take care for their bettas :(

This is great information everyone! Keep them coming! Just remember, by adding your comments or suggestions, you're helping the betta community.

Perhaps before you breed, you might want to ask others if they'd like to buy some from you. Many of my fry already have homes waiting for them.

Just make sure you tell them you haven't started breeding yet. :p
It will be months before you can actually sell them.

Also, look for aqaurium societies in or around your area. While they may not take all the fry, chances are they have a good idea of someone who would take some.

However, it can't be said enough to have a VERY GOOD idea of where all your fry are going before you even try to breed. And always overestimate the amount they will produce.

well to put it bluntly, if u breed ur bettas without think ahead to what u are going to do with the offspring, u arnt too smart. we arnt talking 20-30 fish, there could be hundreds! when u breed fish make sure they have favorable genes so that they can be sold. aquabid is excellent, and rollntider has his auction that needs some traffic. dont get over your head and when u breed ur bettas just assume u will have 100 fry survive and have a plan to get rid of them.

*Bump*

I would like to see more of the experienced breeders partake in this thread... but oh well. :/ The thing is, a lot of times, people come in to the Betta Forum and ask about breeding, but don't know all the options that are out there. Along that note, a lot of those new breeders are scolded for not having a plan of action. This was to help those before a fatal mistake is made to our fish friends. Please input as much as possible. Thanks.

There aren't a lot of options for the fry unless someone has taken the time to breed quality fish. :dunno:

You could always check with the high schools and colleges locally - bettas are a great starter/dorm room pet.

i have never had a problem selling my fish, maybe because vancouver is blessed with many many LFS.
shops may have suppliers but all in all they would all prefer to buy local if at all possible for the reason that they don't have to quarantine local fish and they come to them less stressed and healthier. as long as the fish are not veil tail you should have no problem getting rid of them (providing your town has enough LFS) and making some money as well, provided your fish are healthy and vibrant.
