can anyone recomend a cheap but good syphen to buy for use in a marine tank with sand bed?
the old one i had broke so i have just been using a long pipe and sucking th water through to use it as a syphen.
but the only trouble is it sucks up the sand as well.

any help thanks.

Any siphon with a larger end, as they all are, is going to be the most effective at not sucking up the sand.

All you need is a hose. You don't need the plastic tube.
Hold the tube about an inch off the sand bed. Just enough to get stuff off the surface without sucking up all the sand. It takes some practice, but onc you get the hang of it, its pretty simple..

ime all that is really needed in a well filtrated tank is for water to be siphoned, not for the substrate to be "gravel vac'd" all i use is some 12mm plastic tube and put it down about 1/3 of the way, then clean the filter.

You can use either of the following:
  • a regular large siphon
  • a Python

As you siphon keep the tubing bent between your 1st and 2nd fingers. Suck the sand in about a third or halfway up then pinch or kink the tubing to reduce the flow. The sand will fall back. Lift the siphon out and release the kink allowing the detritus to continue getting suctioned out. You'll be shocked at the 'yuck' that comes out. Move the siphon and repeat.
